Girls Orphanage - Orfanato Nino de Christo

Orfanto Nino de Christo was started in 1974 by Sonia Hane. Sonia has four children of her own. And yet she started to take girls that were living on the streets and in bad home environments into her home. As the numbers of girls continued to climb she eventually rented a small home for them. In fact it is the exact home that we now use as the boy’s orphanage.

As Sonia continued to bring girls in, her numbers grew to thirty six girls living in a very, very small house.

Then a few very generous men from Italy came along and found out what Sonia was doing. They decided to help out by purchasing a piece of land and building her the orphanage they're in now. This building allowed her to take in as many as one hundred and thirty girls.

As the orphanage grew so did the ideas on how to make it bigger and better, supplying the girls with more opportunities and a better home life.

The building in the back left is the existing orphanage, housing up to one hundred and thirty girls. The building in the back right is a new dorm. When this dorm is completed they will then be able to house up to five hundred girls. The building on the front right is a chapel. And the building at the front right is a trade school.

In April of 2006 the foundation for the school was started, and thanks to all of your support the school opened September of 2008. You are all awesome for helping!

The school we have been working on for the past two years is now open!!

This school is located on the property of the girls orphanage in La Romana, Dominican Republic. It is a trade school. We are starting out with four class rooms, and eventually we will build a second floor adding another four class rooms.

At this point we have one class room with sewing machines. However, there has been a problem getting a teacher for this class. The computer room is open with about twenty computers set up and running, with a teacher both in the morning and afternoon. You see in this country all the children go to school in half day session, so they will all have the opportunity to take advantage of this education.

The third class room is a pottery shop. The children have the opportunity to express their artistic side, and the items they make will be sold in a few local shops. The money will then be returned to the school to help keep it going.

The Chapel is also complete

When they are having services on Sunday or during the week this chapel is opened to the public.

A new laundry has been completed

The laundry used to be done in a room that was nine by ten feet. A very small room to wash clothes for up to one hundred and thirty girls, daily. Along with the new laundry they also have a lot of new storage for their clothes, and two new bathrooms with several new showers, toilets, and sinks.

Now the new dorm room has been started

More new and exiting news!!!

An organization called Counterpart International, (www.counterpart.org), is working to put a program together to train youth to work in the Hospitality Industry in this area. They are meeting with industry leaders to find out what their needs are in an employee, then Counterpart will build a training class around those needs. The class will last for eighteen months and be split into three sections so new students will be able to start continuously. These classes will be run out of the new school here at the orphanage.

First time college opportunity

We have seven of our young ladies off to college for the first time ever. These girls were just young eight years ago when we started working in the orphanage. When you stop and think about these young ladies and where they have come this is an awesome accomplishment. We offer thanks to many many people for it. If you would like to help these girls and more go to college you can make a donation to Helping Mend God’s Children, Inc. 100% of your donation goes towards the cause you choose.
